Sassa fraudsters granted R10,000 bail each

Nelspruit Justice of the Peace’s courtroom have granted bail to 2 of the three males who had been caught planning to hack the Sassa system and steal cash supposed for social grants.

Brian Mfundo Masina, 28, and Moses Khumalo, 36 had been granted R10,000 bail on Wednesday whereas the third confederate, 40-year-old Mathole Sydwel Masilela was denied bail

The three had been arrested throughout an intelligence-driven operation organized by a multidisciplinary group led by the Hawks’ critical corruption investigation unit in Mbombela on July 24.

Capt Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi mentioned “this adopted a tip-off that they’d approached a Sassa official and enticed her to help them in hacking into the Sassa system to register bogus beneficiaries.”

In response to Sekgotodi, Masilela was denied bail after the courtroom heard that he was at the moment on R30,000 bail for committing comparable offences in East London.

Throughout the operation, an digital system which was supposed for use to extract data, a laptop computer, a scanner, Sassa playing cards and the suspects’ car had been confiscated.

If their plan labored out, they’d have had entry to Sassa beneficiaries’ accounts leaving no hint behind.

The trio are charged with corruption, fraud, conspiracy to commit an offence and contravention of the Digital Communications Act.

The case was postponed to October 22.
